AT SMM 2006 BREVINI POWER TRANSMISSION PRESENTS THE LATEST POWER TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS FOR MARINE AND PORT INSTALLATIONS

Stacks of aligned containers are a common sight for anyone passing a large commercial port, but watching how they are moved is truly spectacular. When huge port cranes grasp, carry, and neatly stack containers, the big boxes almost seem weightless, yet a full container can weigh up to 40 tons, the equivalent of 40 sedans! During the biennial trade fair held in Hamburg that attracts the leading manufacturers of materials handling equipment for ships and ports, Brevini Power Transmission – through its companies Brevini Riduttori, PIV Drives and Brevini Winches – will present its complete range of planetary gear units and in-line and right-angle gear units that are able to satisfy all the needs of marine and port installations.
Brevini Power Transmission systems have been tested and used with great success in these applications, especially for hoisting winches and slewing drives on the many machines used in moving containers: from straddle carriers to large “ship to shore” cranes.
Hoisting
For hoisting winches installed on straddle carriers used to lift containers, Brevini has a series of winches designed to satisfy the needs of manufacturers of fixed and mobile machinery. The brake and reduction gears on these compact winches are completely housed inside the drum, and the lubrication system, including the filler cap, is inside the winch support structure. That way, the cables do not have to be unwound for ordinary maintenance, which reduces maintenance time and increases worker safety.
Easily configured to suit the application, they can be fitted with a hydraulic or electric motor.
The Posired 2 series of helical gearboxes by PIV Drives is ideal for the main hoist, boom hoist of every kind of cranes, such as harbour cranes, container cranes, STS (ship to shore) cranes and mechanical ship unloaders.
With an output torque of up to 800,000 Nm, Posired 2 is an extremely versatile system composed of just a few components that can be quickly assembled at competitive costs and in a wide variety of configurations to provide the best standard and customized power transmission solutions.
Gantry and trolley travel
PIV Posired 2 right-angle gearboxes are used to move the trolley on large STS (ship to shore) quayside cranes, when high performances are needed. This series takes the typical characteristics of right-angle gearboxes (performance, sturdiness, reliability, and compact size) and enhances them through modern design technology. The result is a universal gearbox that can be mounted on any of the six sides of the housing, which makes it suitable for the most difficult applications and also very easy to install. Thanks to its more than 20 harmonically developed sizes, the Posired 2 is the best and most economical solution for a wide range of applications.
Posired D bevel helical gear motors are used on STS and rubber tired gantry cranes as travel drive and to control the movement of the trolley. These universal, compact, modular right angle gear motors permit high torque and have a motor flange that is integrated in the housing. The possibility of installing self-braking motors makes these gearboxes perfect for cranes and other types of large mobile machinery.
Material handling
The S Series multi-stage planetary gearboxes, with an output torque ranging from 34,000 Nm (for bucket elevators used to unload ships) to 500,000 Nm are ideal for applications that require high torque and compact size and can be used on fixed industrial and self-propelled machinery. Available in 9 different sizes, this series is also more efficient and quieter than ordinary gearboxes. With its many output and input configurations and accessories, the S Series expands the potential use of Brevini planetary gear units in all industrial sectors.
The new Posiplan series of compact gear units composed of a combination of planetary and helical gearboxes is also available for conveyor systems for material handling. These new patented gear units offer the advantages of both technologies and are compact, reliable, and easy to maintain.
Thanks to this innovative solution, compact gear units offer the same performance and reliability of conventional gearboxes but are smaller and lighter, which means lower costs and greater application potential.
The SMM Show in Hamburg
SMM 2006, which will be held in Hamburg, Germany, from September 26 to 29, 2006, is the most important European trade fair in the marine and port installation sector. With more than 1,400 exhibitors and over 42,000 qualified visitors, it is one of the best opportunities for learning more about this fast-developing sector.
